Batenburg is a small city in the Land van Maas en Waal which is part of the municipality of Wijchen. It is located west of Wijchen at the northbank of de Maas. Batenburg has 600 residents and is therefore generally called a town but it has a past of being the oldest city of the province of Gelderland. The historical Batenburg with its castle ruins is a protected cityscape.
In order to protect the residents near the Maas river in the future as well as against flooding the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment has asked for the expansion of the river.
The main contractor of this project is Boskalis and the sand mining is done with our sand processing plant ‘Rotterdam 55′.
Landscape, flora & fauna
East of Batenburg we expanded the river and combined it with the development of new nature. The Maas river gets its original structure back from before the canalization. This is combined with the creation of large low yield pasture areas with silt banks. This creates areas for birds to thrive.
The area will be livestock grazed by the foundation Het Geldersch Landschap.
